Simple, grace-filled habits to help your family start the school year with faith—not just a full calendar.
Back-to-school season always begins with the best intentions.
Fresh backpacks.
Sharpened pencils.
Color-coded calendars.
Lunchboxes ready to go.
But somewhere between homework, soccer practice, forgotten library books, and late-night science projects, it's easy for Jesus to become just another item on the checklist.
The good news? Keeping Christ at the center of your family's school year doesn't require hour-long Bible studies or the perfect morning routine.
It's often the smallest habits—the ones repeated every day—that shape our children's hearts the most.
Here are seven simple routines that can help your family keep Jesus at the center this school year.
1. Start the Morning with God's Word (Even if It's Only Five Minutes)
Morning routines don't have to be elaborate.
In fact, consistency matters far more than length.
Whether you gather around the breakfast table or listen while everyone gets dressed, beginning the day with Scripture reminds everyone where true wisdom comes from.
Some wonderful resources include:
-
The Gospel Coalition Store: Family Devotionals: choose from a vast selection of devotional resources you can read together before school
-
Minno's 5-minute Family Devotions: replace morning cartoons with these 5-minute video devotionals.
-
Big Bible Stories Yoto cards: listen to a Bible story while your child eats breakfast and talk about it together!

Why we love audio
One of the easiest ways to fit faith into busy mornings is simply pressing play.
Our Big Bible Stories Yoto cards were created specifically for busy families. Each story is only a few minutes long, includes engaging character voices and cinematic sound effects, and ends with a simple question: "What does this teach us about God?"
No preparation required.
Just God's Word filling your home while everyone gets ready.

2. Make the Most of Drive Time
If your family spends twenty minutes driving to school every day...
That's nearly 70 hours together during a school year.
Instead of treating the drive as "dead time," make it a meaningful time.
Some ideas:
-
Listen to a Yoto Bible story
-
Try a Christian audio drama, like Adventures in Odyssey
-
Listen to Scripture memory songs, like Slugs and Bugs
-
Pray for teachers by name
-
Pray for classmates
-
Thank God for one thing before getting out of the car
Those little conversations often become the moments children remember most.
3. Choose One Family Memory Verse Each Month
Don't overwhelm yourself with trying to memorize dozens of verses.
One verse per month is enough to create lasting habits.
Try writing it:
-
on your refrigerator
-
inside lunchboxes
-
on a bathroom mirror
-
in the car
Here are a few favorites for back-to-school:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart..." — Proverbs 3:5–6
"Be kind and compassionate to one another..." — Ephesians 4:32
"Let your light shine before others..." — Matthew 5:16
The goal isn't perfection.
It's giving God's Word opportunities to sink deeply into your children's hearts.

One of our favorite resources for memory verse cards is Tiny Theologians! Bold, bright and beautifully designed, these cards are created to help little hearts hold big truths about God’s Word!
4. Make Dinner Your Daily Check-In
Not every family can eat together every night.
But whenever you can, use dinner as more than just a meal.
Try asking questions like:
-
Where did you see kindness today?
-
Did anyone need encouragement?
-
What challenged you?
-
How can we pray for tomorrow?
These simple conversations help children learn to notice God's work in ordinary moments.

If you’re looking for a resource to help guide those dinner table conversations, we love One Year of Dinner Table Devotions by Nancy Guthrie, available at the Gospel Coalition store.
5. End Every Night with Grace
Homework won't always get finished.
Someone will miss the bus.
There will be hard days.
Before bed, remind your children of something far more important than tomorrow's spelling test:
God's love never changes.
A short bedtime prayer, Psalm, or Bible story helps children end the day resting in God's faithfulness instead of their own performance.
This is another favorite time to use audio Bible stories, especially for younger children who are winding down before sleep.
6. Fill Your Home with Faith Throughout the Day
Faith doesn't only happen during "devotion time."
It can become part of everyday life.
Some simple ideas:
-
Worship music while making breakfast
-
Scripture art around the house
-
Prayer before leaving the house
-
Thankfulness at bedtime
-
Christian podcasts or Bible stories during quiet time
Children often learn through repetition more than long lessons.
7. Give Yourself Grace
Perhaps the most important routine of all...
Don't give up after one hectic week.
Some mornings you'll oversleep.
Some evenings everyone will be exhausted.
Some weeks you'll completely forget.
That's okay.
The goal isn't creating a perfect Christian family.
The goal is pointing your children back to Jesus again and again.
Every day is a fresh opportunity.

Every family is different. The best routine is the one you'll actually return to—again and again.

Make This School Year About More Than School
School supplies will wear out.
Backpacks will eventually be replaced.
Grades will be forgotten.
But every conversation about Jesus plants seeds that can last a lifetime.
Whether it's a quick prayer in the driveway, a Bible story during breakfast, or listening to God's Word on the way to soccer practice, those ordinary moments become the places where extraordinary faith grows.
This school year, don't aim for a perfect routine.
Aim for a faithful one.
