3 Things We Want Our Kids to Feel When They Hear God’s Word

Some of us grew up knowing the Bible was true—but not necessarily experiencing it as a place of joy, wonder, and comfort.

We want both for our kids.

We want them to grow up with a deep confidence that God’s Word is true. We want them to know the stories, understand what Scripture teaches, and allow it to shape the way they live.

But we also want them to love coming back to it.

Because our kids are forming a relationship with God’s Word right now—in the stories they hear, the questions they ask, the conversations around the dinner table, and the quiet moments before bed.

And as we think about the kind of relationship we hope they’ll have with Scripture for the rest of their lives, there are three things we hope they experience along the way.

1. Joy

Bible stories don’t always have to feel serious.

Our kids are going to wiggle. They’re going to interrupt. They’re going to laugh at something we absolutely did not expect them to find funny. They might ask a completely unrelated question halfway through.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t listening.

There is a time for reverence, of course. But there is also so much joy in God’s Word.

We want our kids to delight in hearing these stories. To sing the songs loudly. To laugh. To ask us to tell the story one more time. To discover that learning about God can be one of the happiest, most natural parts of their childhood.

We want them to learn early that God’s Word is a delight.

2. Wonder

It can be tempting to rush every Bible story toward the lesson.

What did you learn? What should we do differently? What's the takeaway?

Those questions matter. But sometimes, before we get to the lesson, we want to simply let our kids marvel.

At a sea splitting in two.

At a tiny shepherd standing before a giant.

At Jesus calming a storm with His words.

At a Savior who loved us enough to come near.

At the bigness and goodness and power of God.

And wonder can look like curiosity, too.

We want our kids to know that it's okay to ask questions—even the ones we don't immediately know how to answer.

We don't have to pretend to have every answer.

Sometimes, “I don't know. Let's find out together.” is a pretty beautiful answer.

Let them wonder. Let them be curious. Let them ask big questions about a big God.

3. Comfort

We don't want God's Word to show up in our homes only when there's something to correct.

Of course Scripture helps us teach, guide, and discipline our children. But if the Bible primarily enters the conversation when someone has made a bad choice, it's easy for a child to begin associating God's Word with what they've done wrong.

We want it woven into so much more.

At breakfast.

In the car on the way to school.

While they're coloring at the kitchen table.

Snuggled together before bed.

When they're scared. When they're disappointed. When they're celebrating. When they need to be reminded who they are and how deeply they are loved.

We want Scripture to become a place they instinctively know they can run to.

Because someday, we want our kids to hear “the Bible” and think:

Truth. Comfort. Wonder. Joy. Home.

Not just rules.

Something We Hope They'll Love for a Lifetime

We won't do this perfectly.

There will be distracted Bible times and half-finished conversations. There will be questions we don't know how to answer and days when our best intentions don't happen at all.

But little by little, story by story, conversation by conversation, we have the privilege of showing our kids what God's Word can mean in their lives.

That's the heart behind everything we create at Big Bible Stories for Little Hearts.

We want to help families make God's Word a joyful, natural part of childhood—through stories kids want to hear again and again, songs they sing long after the Yoto has stopped playing, and truths we pray they'll carry in their hearts long after they've outgrown our laps.

Because God's Word isn't just something we want our kids to know.

It's something we hope they'll love for a lifetime.
