A Better Goal for Summer: Discipling Your Children Instead of Chasing Perfect Days

|Big Bible Stories

Summer often begins with the best of intentions.

We imagine afternoons filled with laughter, family adventures, happy siblings, and memories we’ll cherish for years to come. But somewhere between the sibling arguments, meltdowns, endless snack requests, and constant messes, we can find ourselves feeling exhausted—wondering if we’re somehow falling short.

If your goal has become creating the perfect summer (or simply surviving while keeping the peace), you’re not alone.

But what if we reframed our goal?

What Does God Call Parents to Do?

Scripture reminds us that our highest calling isn’t to create perfect childhood memories. It’s to faithfully point our children to Christ.

“Train up a child in the way he should go…” (Proverbs 22:6)

When we keep this perspective, everyday parenting challenges begin to look different.

Instead of seeing sibling conflict as a failure to maintain peace, we can see it as an opportunity to teach our children how God calls us to love one another—to show kindness, forgive quickly, and put others before ourselves.

Instead of rushing through a meltdown as quickly as possible, we can view it as a chance to gently shepherd our child’s heart, helping them learn to do everything without grumbling or arguing and to cultivate a spirit of thankfulness.

The goal isn’t perfect behavior.

The goal is faithful discipleship.

God Is Shepherding You, Too

Perhaps the most comforting truth is this:

As we seek to shepherd our children, God is faithfully shepherding us.

He doesn’t ask us to parent in our own strength. He patiently provides the wisdom, grace, patience, and endurance we need each day.

And just as we cannot change our children’s hearts, neither can they change themselves.

Only God can give them the strength to walk in His ways.

As you encourage your children to obey Him, remind them that God Himself will help them. He is faithful to complete the work He has begun in all of us.

A Simple Way to Begin Each Morning

One of the easiest ways to set the tone for your day is by beginning it with God’s Word.

Listening to a Bible story together over breakfast, while getting dressed, or on the way to an activity gives your family a shared biblical truth to return to throughout the day.

After listening, choose one simple question to ask your children:

  • 🍎 How will you show kindness to your brother or sister today?

  • 🌞 How will you choose joy today?

  • 💛 How will you practice patience today?

    • Try giving a specific example: “If Mommy is on a phone call today, what could patience look like?”

These simple conversations help children connect God’s Word to the ordinary moments they’ll encounter throughout the day.

Using Bible Stories to Build Everyday Faith

We created Big Bible Stories for Little Hearts to help families do exactly this—to make discipleship feel natural and woven into everyday life.

Our Fruit of the Spirit audio card introduces children to the character qualities God desires to grow in each of us and provides an easy starting point for meaningful conversations throughout the day.

Because discipleship doesn’t only happen during family devotions.

It happens in the kitchen, in the car, during sibling disagreements, and in the middle of ordinary Tuesday mornings.
